Iran asserts that the attack on an Iranian vessel could “further ignite and expand the fire of war.”
Iran threatens Ukraine
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran has accused Ukraine of an attack on what it claims was an Iranian “merchant vessel” in the Caspian Sea, warning of the possibility of the “expansion of the fire of war.” Tehran has labeled the incident an “act of aggression,” while simultaneously stating that Iran has supposedly never interfered in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
According to the Iranian MFA, on the morning of July 25, one crew member died and another was injured as a result of the vessel being hit.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns the actions of the Ukrainian regime regarding the assault on an Iranian merchant ship in the Caspian Sea,” the statement reads.
Tehran claims that the attack on the Iranian vessel could “further ignite and expand the fire of war.” Concurrently, the Iranian MFA stated that the country has supposedly “never interfered” in the war between Russia and Ukraine.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran emphasizes that it has never intervened in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine,” stated the Iranian foreign ministry.
Moreover, Tehran accused Kyiv of a “dangerous pursuit to expand the fire of war” and called upon the international community to “hold the Ukrainian leadership accountable.”
The Iranian MFA also threatened that the country reserves the right to “defend its national interests and security,” placing the responsibility for the consequences of the incident on Ukraine and its allies.
Tehran’s statements come against the backdrop of years of military-technical cooperation between Iran and Russia. It was Iran that provided the Russian Federation with the technology for producing Shahed attack drones, which the Russian army actively uses for attacks on Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure, resulting in numerous civilian casualties and injuries.
Earlier on Saturday, July 25, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced successful long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea, which hit vessels involved in the transportation of military cargo from Iran, as well as a warship.
It is worth recalling that this is not the first time Iran has threatened Ukraine. In March of this year, during an operation by the United States and Israel against the Iranian regime, Tehran stated that Ukrainian territory could become a legitimate target for the Islamic Republic if Kyiv provided drones to Tel Aviv.
