A new security scandal has erupted in Germany after a series of flights by unidentified drones were detected over a top-secret underground military base that services Patriot air defense systems.

German law enforcement and military personnel have launched a large-scale investigation into the brazen appearance of unidentified aircraft over a strategically important Bundeswehr facility in the town of Mechernich. According to preliminary data, these drones may have been conducting targeted reconnaissance of infrastructure directly involved in the training and supply of weaponry for the Ukrainian army.

Audacious Maneuvers Over Military Facility
The first alarming reports came on Friday night when private security firm employees noticed unusual activity in the sky above the local barracks. In total, between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM, at least six flights of unidentified drones were recorded, which openly disregarded all safety regulations.
Patrols from the local police and units of the Bundeswehr military police immediately arrived at the scene of the incident and witnessed the trespassers themselves. According to a confidential police report, one of the drones behaved extremely arrogantly and even hovered directly over the heads of the German guards for some time at an altitude of about 40 meters.
According to military experts, the perpetrators could have used professional Fly-380 VTOL type aircraft, capable of carrying over ten kilograms of payload. These powerful drones can accelerate up to 150 kilometers per hour, have a range of up to 400 kilometers, and are typically used for complex mapping or patrolling hard-to-reach regions.
Strategic Value of the Mechernich Base
The military facility in Mechernich is the true logistical heart of the German armed forces, as its main facilities are hidden 130 meters underground. On a vast area of 30,000 square meters, the most critical spare parts and top-secret military equipment are stored, protected from external threats.
The most concerning fact is that this is where the unique “Patriot shipyard” for all of Europe is located, employing highly specialized technicians. They are involved in the repair, maintenance, and modernization of anti-aircraft missile systems, which play a crucial role in protecting Ukrainian cities from Russian missile terror.
Series of Suspicious Incidents and the Russian Trace
This event is a continuation of a series of alarming episodes on German territory, to which, according to intelligence suspicions, Russian state structures or hired agents may be involved. As reported by Stern, the night before, on Wednesday night, a drone with explosives was discovered in the cargo area of Leipzig/Halle Airport near Ukrainian transport aircraft, which sappers had to neutralize.
Security services assume that enemy drones are regularly used to identify weak points in the defense of critical infrastructure and prepare for possible acts of sabotage. The police have already launched an official investigation on suspicion of illegal filming of military objects, with the participation of military counterintelligence and the Joint Drone Defense Center in Berlin.
The problem of espionage against the Bundeswehr is becoming systematic, as evidenced by numerous incidents over training camps for Ukrainian soldiers. For example, in April 2025, near secret communication antennas for submarines in Emden, unidentified men were spotted launching drones. After being challenged by a guard, they fled in a minivan, shouting something in Russian.
And in December 2025, a similar commotion occurred over the deployment site of the latest Arrow 3 air defense system on the border of Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt. At that time, German soldiers even had to use assault rifles with special optical sights, attempting to shoot down the spy aircraft, but none of them were successfully eliminated.
