Last week in the American city of Sea Isle City, New Jersey, 11-year-old Beau Bowers, along with his father Mike, accidentally found a giant, undamaged tooth of a megalodon shark, which became extinct about 2.5 million years ago. The family immediately handed over the find to experts from the local research center, who confirmed its authenticity and deemed it unique due to the perfect condition of the fossil.

This is reported by LADbible.

How the prehistoric artifact was found

The boy’s father, Mike, noticed a strange opening in the rocks while trying to retrieve a regular shell for his collection. Realizing that something much more interesting was hidden inside, but unable to fit his own hand there, the man called his son for help. Mike had to shout across the entire beach for Beau to run over and use his small palm to extract the artifact from the rocky trap.

“I looked down and was just amazed, but I couldn’t get my hand in there, so of course, I was screaming like crazy for my son Beau to come over,” the child’s father said.

The boy admitted that at first, he was very scared to put his hand into the unknown dark crevice, but curiosity won out. When he pulled out the find, the family was shocked by the size and condition of the tooth, which retained all its natural contours, as if the shark had lost it quite recently.

Why this find is considered unique

Specialists from the Whale Watching & Research Center in Cape May have officially confirmed that the tooth belonged to the infamous megalodon. While it is not particularly difficult to find teeth of these prehistoric predators in general, as one shark shed up to 40,000 fangs during its lifetime, finding such a large and absolutely intact specimen is extremely rare.

The geography of the find adds to its uniqueness. Typically, such fossils in impeccable condition are found in the coastal waters of the southeastern United States, while the northeastern coast, where the Bowers family was vacationing, is not known for such discoveries. Little Beau decided to keep this incredible trophy as a souvenir of a successful vacation.

Who were the ancient superpredators

Megalodons, widely popularized in modern cinema, ruled the world’s oceans about 17 million years ago and were striking in their colossal size. The length of such a shark could reach 18 meters, and its weight was equal to the mass of 30 great white sharks, second only to the modern blue whale in size.

Paleontologists estimate that to sustain itself, this marine monster had to consume over 1100 kilograms of food daily. The constant shedding of thousands of teeth during such intense feeding explains why researchers and ordinary tourists periodically encounter their remains on beaches worldwide today.

For reference, a fossil estimated to be hundreds of thousands of years old was found in the Lviv region. Scientists suggest that the found tooth belonged to a woolly mammoth that lived in the Late Pleistocene.
