Модернізована система Iris-T SLS: Німеччина розробляє нову версію для України

The system will feature enhanced automation, 360-degree surveillance, IRIS-T missiles, and in the future, the capability to launch them at targets while in motion.

German company Diehl Defence will publicly unveil a new variant of the Iris-T SLS Mk4 air defense system for the first time. It will be showcased at the ILA 2026 aerospace exhibition, scheduled to take place from June 10th to 14th.

Defense Express reported this.

The primary innovation of this new version of the system is its ability to engage aerial targets while on the move. This capability could potentially enable the system to operate more dynamically and respond faster to threats, such as cruise missiles and attack drones.

At the exhibition, the Iris-T SLS Mk4 will be displayed mounted on a Zetros 6×6 truck from Daimler Truck. However, the system can also be integrated onto other chassis, depending on customer requirements.

The system is being developed as a versatile and scalable solution. Key components of the system, including the radar, launchers, and control systems, are integrated onto a single chassis. If necessary, the air defense system can be augmented with additional sensors or weaponry.

Another significant enhancement is the high level of automation, which is intended to reduce the number of personnel required to operate the system.

The primary armament for the Iris-T SLS Mk4 remains the IRIS-T missiles. The vehicle is equipped with two launchers, each holding four missiles, for a total of eight units. Developers are planning to enable missile launches against targets while the vehicle is in motion in the future.

Additionally, the system may incorporate a launcher for Cicada interceptor drones, which have already undergone successful testing. Furthermore, the installation of a remotely controlled weapon station is also a possibility.

The Iris-T SLS Mk4 provides 360-degree coverage and is equipped with Saab’s Giraffe 1X 3D radar. The system’s stated operational range is up to 12 km, with an engagement altitude ceiling of 6 km.

Development of the new variant is expected to continue for at least another year and a half, with completion anticipated in 2028. Following its development, it is possible that the system could be offered to Ukraine.

Previously, it was reported that Ukraine successfully tested a new interceptor missile, the FP-7.x, which is intended to be a more cost-effective alternative to American Patriot missiles. The manufacturer, Fire Point, is already preparing for scaled production and integration of the missile into the Freya air defense system.

We also recall that Ukraine is nearing the creation of its own ballistic missiles with a range of up to 850 km. According to aviation expert Kostiantyn Kryvolap, the ZSU missile FP-7, with a range of 200 km, is currently undergoing flight testing.
