If your old towels have lost their color and texture, they can be repurposed for practical household needs. Alongside May Vonn, founder of the charity Linens N’ Love, certified organizer Darla DeMorrow shares 11 ways to find a use for old towels.
First and foremost, a worn towel can easily be transformed into a mop alternative. Simply cut a piece of the required size to securely wrap around the base of a mop.
Old towels can also be cut into small pieces and used as reusable sponges for removing makeup or clay masks. They can then be washed and reused.
“I cut towels into squares or rectangles, slightly smaller than the size of a cell phone. I use them with my favorite micellar water or facial cleanser to remove makeup, toss them into a small mesh laundry bag, wash them, and reuse them,” says DeMorrow.
Textiles will come in handy after bathing pets or as extra bedding in carriers and beds. Keep a separate towel near the entrance door to wipe muddy paws after walks in rainy weather.
An old towel can also be used as a liner in the car under a child’s car seat. These often indent or damage the seat. Thus, an unwanted towel can be a lifesaver in such a situation.
You can turn an unwanted towel into a bib for a child who enjoys drawing or cooking with you. Cut a hole in the center of the towel for the child’s head and use it many times over.
Old towels can be used as filling for decorative pillows in the living room. A folded towel inside helps create the desired volume for these pillows.
“If you have good cotton towels that are out of fashion, they are perfect for dusting and polishing furniture. If you cut them into shapes approximately the size of a paper towel, they will be easier to store, more practical to wash, and ultimately to discard.”
May Vonn, founder of Linens N’ Love, suggests using thick towels when weeding or planting. A towel folded twice or thrice reduces strain on the knees during extended periods of gardening.
During sudden spring cold snaps, a light towel gently draped over young shoots helps retain warmth near the soil and protects plants from freezing. Thus, you can protect your seedlings with old textiles and towels.
Additionally, an unwanted towel can always be placed in the trunk. Textiles in the car will be useful for many small tasks.
The last, but certainly not least, option for what to do with old towels is to donate them to animal shelters. Shelters often need towels for bedding, to insulate enclosures, and for washing and caring for animals. Don’t forget to call the shelter and ask if they accept such donations.
What to soak kitchen towels in to remove odor
We remind you that due to daily contact with grease and food residues, kitchen towels lose their whiteness, become stiff, and develop an unpleasant odor, as ordinary washing is not always capable of removing deep stains.
Restoring the fabric’s cleanliness and freshness can be achieved by soaking it for 15 minutes in a solution of 2 liters of hot water, 1 tablespoon of oxygen bleach, 1 tablespoon of laundry detergent, and 1 teaspoon of dish soap, which effectively dissolves grease.
After soaking, gently rub stubborn stains with your hands or a soft brush, then machine wash the towels: white ones at 60°C, colored ones at a lower temperature, rinse well, and dry.
To prevent musty odors, do not leave damp items in the laundry basket, do not overload the washing machine drum, and hang textiles to dry immediately after washing.
