A salad with herring, popular in northern Germany, has become the most delicious dish among all local delicacies for a Ukrainian woman.

Ukrainian refugee Lyudmila Rusina, currently residing in Germany, shared her impressions of the local cuisine. The woman spoke about a special recipe for the German equivalent of the popular Ukrainian salad “Herring under a fur coat.”
According to the Ukrainian woman, in Germany, this dish is called “Herring Salat” – a herring salad. It is most popular in the north of the country, where it is usually prepared with tender herring, Lyudmila shared in her TikTok video.
“Germans also have a ‘fur coat,’ but with cucumber, and the taste surprised me greatly,” Lyudmila shares her impressions.
She explained that the main difference between this dish and the Ukrainian one lies in the serving method and ingredients. Germans do not arrange the products in layers but simply mix them together. The preparation uses: cubes of boiled potatoes and beets, finely chopped onions, a sour apple, pickled cucumbers, and 300 grams of herring.
The dressing is made from mayonnaise, sour cream, a small amount of cucumber pickle juice, pepper, and salt. After mixing, the salad is left in the refrigerator for at least two hours, or overnight, to allow it to soak well.
“My verdict is that it is very tasty and, perhaps, the most delicious thing I have tried from German cuisine,” the Ukrainian woman concluded.
