НБУ's interventions again exceeded $1 billion for the fifth time in six weeks

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), which managed to reduce its interventions on the interbank market by $0.87 billion the week before last, increased them again last week to $1.07 billion, according to statistics on the regulator’s website.

According to the National Bank’s data, in the first four days of last week, the average daily negative balance of currency purchases and sales by legal entities increased to $168.5 million from $104.0 million the previous week, totaling $674.0 million.

In the currency exchange market, the population’s average daily negative balance, conversely, decreased: from Monday to Thursday, it amounted to almost $11.6 million compared to $34.1 million the week before last. This was due to both the average daily positive balance from non-cash transactions of $7.9 million compared to a negative $5.6 million the previous week, and a decrease in the negative average daily balance in the cash market to $19.5 million from $28.5 million.

The official hryvnia exchange rate against the dollar weakened from 44.4950 UAH/$1 at the beginning of the week to 44.6676 UAH/$1 at the end, and against the euro – from 50.8600 UAH/EUR1 to 51.0595 UAH/EUR1.

In the cash dollar market, the rate changed little over the past week: according to the “Minfin” resource, the average purchase rate by banks is 44.45 UAH/$1, and the selling rate is 44.92 UAH/$1; in the “black” market, they are 44.63 UAH/$1 and 44.73 UAH/$1, respectively.
