The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine stated that the words of the Ambassador of Ukraine to Great Britain, Valeriy Zaluzhny, regarding Ukraine’s membership in NATO were “taken out of context”. Previously, Zaluzhny stated that Ukraine would never join NATO.
This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine in a comment to Suspilne.
“The ambassador’s words regarding Ukraine’s prospects for NATO membership were taken out of context and gained resonance, although the full quote primarily concerned the JEFJEF (Joint Expeditionary Force) is a military alliance of Northern European countries, founded in 2014 and led by Great Britain, established for rapid crisis response. It includes 10 countries: Great Britain, Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, and Sweden., not NATO. This is logical, as Britain is the framework state and leader. Regarding NATO accession, the Mission of Ukraine to NATO is responsible for this direction,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reported.
The department also emphasized Ukraine’s official position on NATO membership.
“Ukraine’s course towards joining the North Atlantic Alliance remains unchanged. Currently, there is no other effective collective security system apart from the one that exists based on the Washington Treaty,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine stated.
On August 3, the Ambassador of Ukraine to Great Britain, Valeriy Zaluzhny, stated that he did not see prospects for Ukraine’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Zaluzhny spoke at a top diplomats’ event when asked to comment on Ukraine’s participation in the JEF (Joint Expeditionary Force) coalition.
“I know NATO very well. For about twelve years, I personally worked on us mastering NATO standards, and every year I listened to tales about how we would soon join NATO. Unfortunately, we will never join it,” said Zaluzhny.
The irreversibility of Ukraine’s European and Euro-Atlantic course has been enshrined in the preamble to the Constitution of Ukraine since 2019.
