August 17 (August 30), the Orthodox calendar commemorates the day of remembrance of the Holy Martyr Myron. The Holy Martyr Myron lived in the city of Achaea (modern-day Greece) in the 3rd century. He was a priest and served God and people, preaching the teachings of Jesus Christ. According to church tradition, Myron was distinguished by his kindness, humility, and great love for his neighbors.
He helped the poor, supported those going through difficulties, and by his example showed what a true Christian should be. For him, faith was not just words, but a daily deed – serving people and God.
The times of Saint Myron’s life coincided with the reign of the Roman Emperor Decius, known for his large-scale persecution of Christians. During this period, believers were required to renounce Christ and offer sacrifices to pagan gods.
When the pagans came to the church where Myron served, they demanded that he renounce the Christian faith. However, the saint was not afraid of threats and remained true to his calling.
According to legend, he openly confessed himself a Christian and refused to worship idols. For this, he was seized and subjected to brutal torture.
Despite his suffering, Saint Myron did not renounce Christ. His courage impressed even some pagans, as he endured the trials with prayer and peace.
According to church tradition, after numerous tortures, Saint Myron was martyred around the year 250. He accepted a martyr’s death, remaining faithful to his faith until the last moment of his life.
This is why the Church calls him a holy martyr – a person who gave his life for the confession of Christian truth.
Church holiday in Ukraine on August 17 according to the old calendar
According to the old calendar, on August 17, Ukraine honored the memory of the Holy Martyr Eudokia. Eudokia lived in the 2nd century in the city of Heliopolis of Phoenicia. According to legend, she was a wealthy and famous woman, but after encountering the Christian faith, she changed her life, accepted baptism, and dedicated herself to serving God and helping the needy.

In the folk calendar, this day was called Myron’s Day – in honor of the Hieromartyr Myron, whose memory Christians commemorate on August 17. One of the most important traditions of this date was to show mercy and support those in need: orphans, widows, lonely, and destitute people.
